The all-new next-generation pickups are here. introductionthe all-new chevy silverado is here. Completely redesigned, the new silverado is built on a stiffer chassis. Also very important, the 2007 silverado features an all-new interior that can be outfitted for work or pleasure. the new silverado is designed to continue its reputation among owners as the 'strongest, most dependable and longest lasting truck on the road.' the new styling is bold yet still conservative when compared with the latest pickups from dodge, nissan, toyota and ford. While the sheet metal is all new, the main reason the new silverado looks bolder is that it's three inches wider in front and an inch wider in the rear than the outgoing generation. (the older-generation trucks will continue to be sold as the 2007 silverado classic. Naturally, not all engines extended cab and crew cab models have back seats and windows in the side doors that power down. The extended cab has rear access doors that are hinged at the rear but that open to 170 degrees to provide full access to the rear seating area. the standard cab can be outfitted with a standard (6-foot, 6-inch) or long (8-foot) beds. Options include driver and front-seat side-impact air bags, side-curtain airbags, stabilitrak electronic stability control with rollover mitigation technology, autotrack active transfer case, ultrasonic rear parking assist, onstar. option prices vary by trim level and body style. Among them: a cargo management rail system for the truck bed 175), a power sliding sunroof 795), 20-inch wheels 1,295), a power sliding rear window 200), rear-seat entertainment system 1,955), navigation system 2,250), rear-locking differential 395), stabilitrak electronic stability control 425). This is the previous-generation version and should not be confused with the vehicle covered in this report. walkaroundthe 2007 chevy silverado may not have the aggressive styling of the dodge ram or nissan titan or even the toyota tundra or ford f-150, but its upright design may be considered both bold and appealing to its faithful customers, and they buy hundreds of thousands of silverados each year. the new design gives the 2007 chevy silverado a taller and stronger appearance than the previous generation. Indeed, the new silverado should look stronger because it's some three inches wider in front and an inch wider in the rear. however, a more raked windshield (raked at 57 degrees) and careful aerodynamic and body-building engineering make the truck both quieter on the inside and more fuel efficient. Gm boasts that the silverado and gmc sierra are the first full-size trucks to offer both 300 horsepower and 20 miles per gallon on the highway. the large, gold chevy bowtie badge is set against a wide, three-bar chrome grille. The grille is flanked by stacked headlamps sporting the latest reflector-optics. The front bumper incorporates rectangular fog lamps. the hood has a wide power dome. Bulging front fenders wrap over the front wheels and incorporate the headlamps within their forward sweep. Likewise, the rear quarter panels are punctuated by large faired wheel wells. the rear view of the truck features stacked tail lamps on either side of a tall tailgate that has a sculpted center section that mimics and inverts the shape of the fender flares. built on what general motors calls its gmt900 platform, the silverado shares much of its underpinnings with the tahoe suv, though the pickup truck gets a unique rear frame section that is 245 percent stiffer. Overall, compared to the former gmt800 truck, the frame is 234 percent stiffer torsionally, 62 percent more resistant to bending and 136 percent stiffer laterally. All of this allows such things as reducing the gap between the truck bed and passenger compartment and between fenders and bumpers. It also enhances aerodynamics and fuel efficiency and allows suspension components to provide improved ride and handling characteristics. the front suspension has switched from torsion bars to coil-over shock absorbers and the rack-and-pinion steering gear is mounted to the engine cross member frame to provide enhanced control and feedback. The truck also has a new rear axle design with shocks absorbers mounted outboard and more upright for better dynamic control. interiorthe silverado wt and lt come with what chevy calls the pure pickup truck interior while the ltz features a more luxurious interior. the pure pickup interior is more driver oriented, includes two glove boxes in the dashboard, one of them just about the right size to hold a pair of work gloves and a few small items, and a 40/20/40-split front bench seat with the center section of the seat back folding down to form a wide arm rest with lots of storage capacity. This interior also features larger switchgear controls and interior door handles designed to be easily manipulated even while wearing bulky work gloves. the more luxury-oriented interior includes bucket seats with a permanent center console with 20 liters of storage capacity. The center stack also puts ventilation and audio controls within easy site and reach of the front seat passenger. This version has a single glove box in the dash. extended cabs feature stadium-style seating with an elevated view for those sitting in the second row. Both the extended cab and crew cab versions offer plenty of rear legroom. The rear seat bottoms can be easily be folded up to provide more room on the floor for cargo. Rear seats are split 60/40 so one side can be folded up for cargo while the other is used for seating. chevy says the interior of the new sierra is 20 percent quieter than its predecessor, thanks to enhanced insulation materials, much like those used in the company's sport utility vehicles, and to aerodynamic improvements that reduce wind noise. driving impressionwe've driven two versions of the all-new 2007 chevy silverado on paved and gravel roads in the desert west and north of phoenix. Later we got into the more upscale version of the lt with an extended cab and standard bed, same v8 engine and same z85 suspension. 2007 chevrolet avalanche review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new version is a much tighter ship. introductionthe chevy avalanche has been redesigned and re-engineered for 2007 and the new version is vastly superior to its predecessor. The new avalanche rewards its driver with taut handling. It's well designed throughout with impressive attention to detail. The previous-generation avalanche was good. This new one is better. the avalanche is and always has been one of a kind. It successfully combines the hauling capacity of a long-bed pickup with the comfort of a five-passenger sport utility vehicle. It switches between these roles using its ingenious midgate, a removable rear bulkhead between the passenger compartment and the pickup bed. Along with a hard, tonneau-like bed cover, the midgate allows the avalanche to be configured as a tahoe-sized sport utility with a short bed. Fold down the rear seats and open the midgate and it's like a pickup with an enclosed eight-foot bed, capable of securing valuable gear from thieves or shielding drywall from weather. Remove the rear glass and the tonneau panels and it's a sporty, open-air truck capable of hauling an atv. for 2007, none of this practicality changes, including, for the most part, its workhorse capabilities. It's as long as a chevy suburban and can haul a lot of stuff, with payloads over 1,300 pounds and a bed designed for abuse. handling and ride quality are greatly improved, thanks to updated underpinnings. The previous-generation avalanche handled well for a truck its size, but this new one handles much better. a major redesign gives the cab a more car-like look and feel, with a classier dash and more comfortable seats. Combined with better-integrated driver-assist and entertainment features, the creature comfort upgrades are as welcome as the modernized mechanicals. Also, the midgate, removable rear window, tonneau covers and other features seem to snap together even better than before and everything appears to be of high quality. finally, there's the facelift. This cleaner, quieter, more mature look says as much as any of the other updates, upgrades and new technology about the vision chevy has for its future. It's a vision with high promise. The heavy-duty avalanche 2500 has been discontinued and is no longer available. the ls 2wd 31,790) is the entry-level avalanche, along with the ls 4wd 34,790). Seats are cloth covered benches, front and rear; the front splits 40/20/40 with a six-way power driver's seat and manual recline on both driver and passenger seat, the rear 60/40. Standard features include dual-zone air conditioning, the usual array of powered utilities including the tailgate lock, multi-media stereo radio, leather-wrapped tilt steering wheel, front and rear seat carpeted floor mats, two auxiliary power outlets, ready-to-tow trailer setup and p265/70r17 all-season tires on aluminum wheels. Notable options include a stereo upgrade adding an in-dash, six-cd changer 300); xm satellite radio with pre-paid, three-month trial subscription 199); power adjustable pedals 120) with rear park assist 245); luggage rack 195) and cross rails 45); auto-lock rear differential 295); and white-letter highlighted tires 125). Halogen fog lamps are standard. A front bench seat is a no-cost option. The luggage rack crossrails are optional, along with the rear-view camera system, the sunroof, the rear-seat entertainment system and the navigation system. safety features that come standard on all models include the required front-seat airbags and latch rear-seat child safety seat anchors. The onstar crash-notification system is standard. Full-coverage, side-curtain airbags that protect against head injuries in side impacts and rollovers are optional 350) on the ls and the lt, including the 2lt treatment, and standard on the 3lt and ltz. Act. walkaroundthe chevy avalanche is a truck, and it's a big truck. In fact, the avalanche is just an inch shorter than a chevy suburban. (okay, it's 1. 1 inches shorter.) the avalanche rides on the gmt900 platform, meaning it shares its basic structure with the chevy suburban, tahoe, silverado and other full-size gm pickups and suvs. The new 2007 avalanche doesn't look as massive the first-generation (2002-2006) models did, even when they were ordered without the side cladding. In practical terms, the new avalanche is just as big as the previous-generation models. (to be exact, the new one is 0. 4 inches shorter.) the 2007 avalanche features some significant styling and design changes, though many of the changes are subtle. A fresh face brightens the front end. Thick, horizontal lines emphasizing the substantial girth remain, but are now integrated well with the body-colored grille and headlight surrounds. Lighting elements share space in single units, replacing the previous model's bifurcated assemblages. A bold bow-tie icon graces the grille crossbar. A high-relief lower fascia houses tow hooks and tries to look like the leading edge of a skid plate (which, by the way, is not offered by the factory, even on the 4wd version). the side aspect is mightily spruced up, with a faster, more laid-back windshield leading to smooth, gracefully sculpted flanks topped by understated, flush-mounted windows. Gaps between body panels are tight. Full-round door handles accommodate gloved hands. Squarish wheel wells look underfilled, even with the optional 20-inch wheels. Essential as the signature feature of the avalanche is the angular, hard plastic bed cover with the flying buttresses arcing down from the roofline to the bed sidewalls; it's the only design cue that clashes with the sleeker look of the new model. the tailgate presents a more traditional pickup look than that of the previous models. It's less stylized, with bumper and release assembly now painted body color. That assembly also now functions as a base for the optional rearview camera. Chevy says this can help a solo driver hitch up a trailer; we haven't tested this yet, but it could save a lot of trial and error. We have used the rearview camera for parallel parking and other maneuvers in tight quarters and can attest to its value. This system is not a gadget. It speeds parking and maneuvering and can help alert the driver to the presence of a child or adult behind the truck. The tailgate is now spring loaded to lighten its perceived weight, but it still seemed heavier than its countersprung counterparts on the ford f-150 and the new 2007 toyota tundra. interiorthe new interior of the 2007 avalanche breaks with chevy tradition much more than the exterior does. The new cabin marks a watershed in ease of use, not to mention ease on the eye. following a pattern established in the new tahoe and suburban, the interior designers slashed several inches from the top of the dash, rounded it off and smoothed it out, effectively pushing it down and away from the front seat occupants. Everything about the dash and instrument cluster is leaner, cleaner, dare we say it, more like a car's.
