1998 dodge dakota review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Baby bear says this one's just right. introductionthe full-size dodge ram brought big-rig styling and a host of innovative features and design details to the pickup truck market; its popularity is now a matter of record. New colors have been added to this year's palette. It's most appropriate for a delivery truck for the local auto parts store.  next up is an optional 3. 9-liter v6 that generates a very useful 175 hp and 225 lb.-ft. It's stronger than any other engine available in any truck that's anywhere near the dakota's size. Depending upon specific configuration and drivetrain, the 5. 2-liter gives the dakota a towing capability of 6700 pounds, a level the imports and compacts just can't match.  finally, dodge is introducing the dakota r/t this spring with a 5. 9-liter v8 that makes 250 hp and a crushing 345 lb.-ft. It just won't take no for an answer.  from the outside, the dakota looks and feels like a slightly smaller near-clone of the ram. The body comes in a regular cab or extended club cab with cargo box lengths of either 6. 5 or 8. 0 feet. The base price was $19,665; some carefully selected options raised that figure to $22,405, which we thought seemed reasonable.  as we expected, the performance and pulling power of the v8 was several steps above that of most of the v6-powered compact pickups. The dakota isn't particularly fast because, even empty, it weighs about two tons. Everything was screwed together tight, the doors and tailgate closed with an authoritative slam and nothing creaked or rattled. It's roomy, comfortable and full of features, big and small, that make getting down the road a pleasure.  the standard interior comes with a comfortable bench seat, split into three parts on a 40/20/40 percent basis. The center portion has a folding back that also serves as a center armrest and includes a large, multi-function storage console. Optional bucket seats come with a huge center console that includes specific spots for tissue paper, maps and cassettes or cds. Both bench and bucket seats have their strengths, so choosing between them is a personal decision.  other neat touches: three cupholders in the forward portion of the center console in three sizes, for a two-liter bottle, 20-oz. Bottle and soft-drink can -- just right for papa bear, mama bear and baby bear. In the club cab, the rear seat cushions are split 60/40, increasing versatility when carrying people and cargo. Under those rear seat cushions are two storage compartments; one houses the jack and tools and provides some storage space, the other is a generous storage bin. In addition to the front cupholders, there are cupholders in the quarter panels for the rear-seat passengers. Order the automatic transmission and the place where the manual transmission lever would poke through the floor becomes yet another little tray to toss odds and ends.  those whose lifestyle revolves around a trailer hitch should seriously consider the well-designed fold-away power mirrors. They measure a huge 6x9 inches and are the biggest we've ever seen outside a truck stop. But the dakota club cab is wide enough for three adults back there; and as long as those in front move their seats up a bit, the three in back should find the trip to the football stadium parking lot livable. driving impressiontrucks keep getting better in terms of ride quality, but they're still trucks. It has that relentless straight-ahead stability that makes easy work of long highways, yet it works commendably well when the pavement takes a few turns. 2009 dodge challenger review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The new modern classic musclecar is a home run, in spite of the times. introductionafter a hiatus of more than 30 years the dodge challenger returned as a new model for 2008. And chrysler's biggest styling hit since the pt cruiser promptly sold out. Style rules, yet asks few compromises. Some will opine about the timing of the dodge musclecar's return, while others will note chicken little was last seen impaled in a viper grille somewhere. Others still, not content to leave anything alone, will buy the r/t as the basis for their next hot rod and blow all the money saved on an srt8 on more power, accessories, and modifications. The r/t can be used as a daily driver, at least for shorter distances and fuel consumption, and will compete with the mustang gt, over which it has both advantages and disadvantages. Challenger r/t runs a 5. 7-liter hemi v8 rated at 370 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque with the standard five-speed automatic; power increases to 375 hp and 404 pound-feet of torque on premium fuel with the optional six-speed manual/track pak group. The srt8 is fast, stable and ready to go to any track, dodge's fastest car this side of the twice-the-price viper. Not challenger-distinctive in appearance, it does offer the same rumbling v8, rear-drive musclecar recipe (without a manual gearbox option), and again like the challenger, good independent suspension and brakes for about the same price as an r/t.  challenger features an entirely new body, but many of its parts, systems and structures are shared with the chrysler 300 and dodge charger (and magnum). Options include leather upholstery, eight-way power driver's seat, heated front seats, moonroof, disc changer and navigation with real-time traffic, 276-watt boston acoustics audio system, 18-inch aluminum wheels, compact spare tire, abs and electronic stability control and traction control.  challenger r/t 29,320) features a 5. 7-liter hemi v8 rated at 370 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque with a five-speed automatic. R/t adds heated outside mirrors, body-colored rear spoiler and mirrors, metal fuel filler door, leather-wrapped wheel and shifter, illuminated visor mirrors, dual chromed rectangular exhaust pipes, and fog lamps. Mechanical upgrades to accompany the added power include 18-inch aluminum wheels and wider tires, stability control, bigger antilock brakes, and firmer suspension. Options include leather upholstery, navigation system, 368-watt boston acoustics audio system, bi-xenon headlamps, 20-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels, hood-into-fender stripes and functional hood scoops, keyless go, remote start, compact spare tire, homelink, a trip computer with performance pages (128 functions total), and steering-wheel audio/data controls. The track pak 995) adds a six-speed manual gearbox with twin-disc clutch and pistol-grip shifter, limited-slip differential, load-leveling shocks, performance steering, hill-start assist, bright pedal covers and different mufflers.  challenger srt8 39,320) has a 425-hp 6. 1-liter hemi v8, brembo brakes, a special suspension, and a limited-slip differential. Many bits optional on the r/t are standard here, including a better audio system, bi-xenon headlamps, trip/data computer, leather, keyless go, and sirius satellite radio. The srt8 rear spoiler is flat black, the front spoiler deeper and ducted for brake cooling, hood scoops are functional, the fuel filler is polished aluminum, and 20-inch forged aluminum wheels and heated sport seats are standard. Options are the track pak, 522-watt 13-speaker kicker audio system, navigation, hood stripes, remote start, and high-performance staggered-size tires.  safety features on all challengers include dual frontal airbags and side curtain airbags front and rear. Antilock brakes with brake assist, stability control and traction control are available on the se and standard on r/t and srt8. walkaroundthe challenger is the third in chrysler's triple-play of styling hits, following the retro-look pt cruiser and the chrysler 300/dodge magnum/charger from which it's derived. It was unanimously praised by on-lookers as a cool-looking car and is as faithful to the original as has been done in recent years.  part of the challenger's appeal comes from its commanding presence; it's a big car. The challenger is also about 10 inches longer than the ford mustang, its closest competitor until the chevrolet camaro returns.  unlike most new cars, the maximum width is carried well out to the ends resulting in a broad, menacing car. The very wide, horizontal grille, spoilers and tail lamps accentuate the width, as does a turret-like roof and window treatment, and the haunches over the rear wheels where the roof fairs into the trunk and the character line kicks up. The proportions all seem just right, from the carrier-deck expanse of flat hood larger than most modern pickups, to the foot-high side glass and dark lower body trim, and into the massive rear roof pillars.  the major lines are only part of the equation, with details just as well executed. Where signals rode below the bumper on the '70 the new one has fog lamps, and careful sculpting has maintained the classic look without destroying aerodynamic efficiency.  from the side, the srt8's 20-inch wheels frame bright red brake calipers and slotted discs and fill large fender openings that are creased along the edges. Hood scoops carry hemi badges on v8 cars and are functional in that cool air goes in or warm air vents to atmosphere, but they do not feed cold air straight into the engine; the ducts in the spoiler direct cooling air to the front brakes and small winglets at the front wheel openings better define airflow. The fixed side rear windows do not allow the full open hardtop of the original with its frameless doors but in a nod to that look dodge kept the pillars behind the glass so they aren't so obvious. A bright fuel filler cap on r/t and srt8 finishes off the driver's side. The door handles look retro and stylish, but they're hard to grab.  out back, a full-width panel of red lights with a pair of backup lights wedged in the middle of it, along with chrome dodge lettering in a font right out of 'that '70s show.' while only the outer pairs of bulbs light for brake and turn functions, the entire width is used for tail lights. 2003 dodge ram 2500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New hemi v8 brings more power. introductiondodge ram boasts high levels of refinement and comfort. Completely redesigned and re-engineered last year, this latest-generation ram has re-established dodge as a leading product among full-size pickups. But all this refinement doesn't mean the dodge ram has gone soft. The new-generation ram also delivers improved towing and hauling capability, plus more powerful and efficient engines.  for 2003, dodge has introduced a sophisticated new five-speed automatic transmission. A more capable off-road package has been added, along with a rugged work special. Also new for 2003 is a line of heavy-duty 2500 and 3500 models, not covered here.  in january 2003, the 5. 7-liter hemi v8 replaced the aging 5. 9-liter v8, increasing power by 100 horsepower and 40 pounds-feet of torque while improving fuel economy by 10 percent. lineupdodge ram is available with two cab configurations, regular cab and quad cab. Prices start at $18,525 for a 2wd regular cab short wheelbase. Quad cab models ride on a wheelbase that's 20 inches longer than comparable regular cab models.  two bed lengths are available, a 6-foot, 3-inch standard bed and an 8-foot long bed. Ordering the long bed adds $300-$350 to the price, and another 20 inches to the wheelbase. For maximum economy, two-wheel-drive rams can be ordered with a 3. 7-liter v6 that's similar in design to the 4. 7-liter v8. The most powerful engine in the line is the new 5. 7-liter hemi v8 with hemispherical combustion chambers for improved airflow and burn. The new hemi produces 345 horsepower and 375 foot-pounds of torque. When properly equipped, that increases the towing capacity to 9200 pounds and payload by an additional 500 pounds. The hemi adds about $800 to the price.  a five-speed manual transmission is standard with the 3. 7-liter v6 and 4. 7-liter v8. Optional is a new five-speed automatic 975) that includes an alternate second gear for hill-climbing and towing (so it's technically a six-speed). This new transmission is more responsive than the unit it replaces.  three trim levels are available, st, slt, and laramie.  st is the base level and comes standard with air conditioning, but is equipped with vinyl upholstery, wind-up windows, and manual door locks.  slt adds $1700-$3200, depending on cab style and driveline, and includes the 4. 7-liter v8, plus cloth upholstery, nicer interior trim, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a host of convenience items, and wider tires.  laramie is the luxury package, which costs in the neighborhood of $7800-$8900 and brings leather seating surfaces, dual-zone air conditioning, a premium stereo, 17-inch cast aluminum wheels, and a long, long list of luxury features.  sport body-color trim for grille and bumpers is available for $470 with any trim level; that price includes fog lights and 17-inch aluminum wheels. Also new this year is an off-road package 870-$1405) for 4wd models consisting of a 3. 92:1 limited-slip differential, heavy-duty engine cooling, lt275/70r17 all-terrain tires, skid plates, tow hooks, and fog lamps. walkaroundram's radical big-rig styling turned the pickup world upside down when it was introduced in 1994. It was a highly successful design, one that gave the dodge pickups a look of power and capability. The bold styling also helped boost sales exponentially. So dodge had no intention of turning away from the big horse-collar grille and freightliner fenders when it redesigned the ram. This latest dodge pickup maintains and even reinforces the look established nine years ago.  the sheet metal is indeed all new. Park a 2002-3 ram next to a 2001 or earlier ram and the differences are striking. The design has been extensively re-sculpted for reduced wind noise and better rainwater management. The new ram looks sleek and refined compared with the previous model. The old one looks mashed down compared with the new one.  few grilles are as instantly recognizable as the massive horse collar grille of the ram. Even more massive this year, the grille also provides trim-level identification: the outside rim is all chrome on the slt model, with a gray honeycomb center. Laramie features a body-color grille surround and chrome cross hairs. Sport trim includes a body-color surround and cross hairs with unique chrome billets in the center.  moving rearward, the new ram presents a more robust appearance than before. The broad, sloping hood has a pronounced crown that falls over the sides to the prominent front fenders. A faster, raked-back windshield improves aerodynamics and water management, and gives the new ram a more modern appearance. The leading edge of the front door overlaps the a-pillar, creating a smoother transition from the front of the cab to the side. Everything is smoother and more integrated. The big side mirrors, great for visibility, are now mounted on platforms to reduce wind noise, and a channel has been specially designed to keeps water off of the mirrors. An integrated air dam improves engine cooling and air conditioner performance.  standard bed length is 6 feet, 3 inches, but an 8-foot bed is now available for both cab styles. That's a bit much when trying to heave heavy gear aboard. interiorram interiors were completely redesigned last year.  the new interior is more comfortable than before. That comfort starts with roominess. To fit more space in the cab, dodge stole 3 inches out of the bed and added it to the cab's total length. Dodge claims its regular cab has the largest interior of any full-size standard-cab pickup.  the cloth 40/20/40 split bench front seat in the sport model is quite supportive, better than some of the seats we've seen recently in other brands. The optional leather seats are also comfortable and supportive during long drives. Three-point shoulder belts are used at all locations, including the rear center seat. Adjustable pedals are usually offered only with an automatic transmission, but for 2003 dodge has made them available on manual-shift pickups as well. We believe that's an industry first.  side-curtain airbags are a $390 option on regular cabs, $490 on quad cabs. A big fold-down center armrest/console comes with adjustable dividers and a power outlet. White-faced instruments with turquoise numbers look sporty and trendy, but don't offer the legibility of traditional white-on-black designs, particularly at dusk. At night, the instruments are nicely illuminated in green.  the design of the audio system could be improved for ease of use. Setting a button for a station, for example, requires pressing a separate 'set' button, rather than just holding the station button down. Sliding bass and treble controls are harder to adjust than knobs when bouncing around in a pickup truck. Optional steering wheel audio controls 75) solve this with brilliantly designed buttons behind the steering wheel that are easy to use. Likewise, cruise controls 390, including tilt steering) on the steering wheel are easy to operate.  otherwise, the center dash is a paradigm of convenience. Large heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (hvac) buttons can be operated while wearing gloves. A textured fabric is used for trim around the audio and hvac controls, somewhat similar to what's found in volkswagens, gives the center dash a nice look and feel. Just below the hvac controls is a slot lined with a rubber mat that's perfect for a wallet or other small items. A big panel below that folds down with adjustable cup holders. 2007 dodge ram 2500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New diesel engine leads refinements for 2007. introductionpickup trucks are america's ultimate raw material. Generic in concept, the lowly pickup truck can be configured in dozens, even hundreds of ways to suit any need and price point. The dodge ram heavy duty lineup is a perfect example.  the heavy-duty rams have been with us for a few years now. Last redesigned for 2003, they aren't nearly as new as the latest from ford and general motors but benefit from some recent freshening.  new for 2007: the ram heavy duty benefits from a new diesel engine and automatic transmission plus some minor refinements.  the ram mega cab was launched as a 2006 model. Mega cab is built on the heavy duty chassis and comes fitted with the hemi engine. The extra-large mega cab was created by re-proportioning the relationship between cab and bed on a long wheelbase truck, adding 20 inches to the cab and shortening the bed to 6 feet, three inches.  the result is acres of cab space, with six seats and plenty of head, shoulder, leg and hip room. The back seats are roomy and comfortable with reclining seatbacks, separate rear heating and air conditioning outlets, reading lights and a center armrest with cup holders, and available dvd entertainment. And there's space behind the back seats for cargo. Folding down the back seats reveals a huge cargo area (72. 2 cubic feet) with a flat load floor. The rear doors open big and wide, making it easy to load stuff inside. Covered bins are provided back there for storing gear and smaller items, and hooks are provided for hanging things.  the mega cab ram rides and drives like a heavy duty pickup, regardless of 1500, 2500, or 3500 rating. It provides engine braking down long highway grades, thereby leaving the brakes cool, fade-free, and ready for stopping. The diesel's power and fuel economy make it an excellent choice for owners who tow heavy trailers long distances.  the ram hd is equally at home serving solo contractors, landscape crews or families with heavy toys, and everyone in between. Despite a reputation for being the most truck-like, the heavy-duty rams are civilized and make trucking enjoyable. lineupthe 2007 dodge ram hd comes in three trim levels, st, slt and laramie, and three cabs (regular, quad, mega) with a range of engine choices, payloads and towing capacities. A trx4 (mild off-road) and power wagon (more severe off-road) model are offered only on 2500-series trucks.  the mega cab 1500 is the light-duty configuration, but still has the heavy parts underneath and can haul payloads of up to 2,430 pounds and trailers of up to 8,750 pounds when equipped with 4. 10:1 axle gears. The mega cab 1500 comes with the 5. 7-liter hemi v8 and a five-speed automatic transmission, and prices range from slt 4x2 31,270) to the laramie 4x4 40,725).  the 2500 25,905-$42,925) comes standard with the hemi v8 with six-speed manual or available five-speed automatic, optional with the cummins 6. 7-liter turbo diesel 7,095) and a six speed manual or six-speed automatic 1,575). The power wagon is $37,035-$39,990 depending on cab, and 4wd adds about $3,000 to any standard 2500-series.  the 3500 30,515-$49,090) may appear pricey because the cummins diesel is often standard equipment, especially on dual rear wheel models. Options are limited to powertrain and chassis equipment, side curtain airbags, and a few cosmetic upgrades.  slt, the standard trim on mega cabs, includes essentials stain-repellent cloth upholstery, an overhead console with mini trip computer and compass, speed control, power windows and door locks, keyless entry, and power mirrors. Options for slt include a power-sliding rear window, a bed liner, powered trailer tow mirrors, sun roof 850), power adjustable pedals 120), am/fm/6cd/mp3 with infinity speakers 950), cassette 100), navigation radio 2,545), sirius satellite radio 195), dvd rear-seat entertainment system 1,200), uconnect bluetooth hands-free wireless communication system 325), bucket seats 490), and 17-inch forged aluminum wheels 345). A part-time electric shift transfer case is available on 4wd models.  laramie models add leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, heated front seats, security alarm, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and sentry key engine immobilizer. From the front, a more refined crosshair grille with strong, full-chrome collar remains instantly recognizable as a strong dodge ram signature. With the front-end restyled last year and a dual-rear wheel option added after introduction, the tail now gets attention with new taillight styling similar to the dodge durango and dakota, and jeep liberty.  from the side, the mega cab makes an even more dramatic impression. Very wide rear doors are unique to the immense mega cab, with a very large proportion of window glass to door. The dark glass rear doors and wide pillar suggest a limousine, and interior volume reinforces the impression. Behind this huge cab, the bed looks small, but it remains significantly large: 6 feet, 3 inches in length and 51 inches wide between the wheel wells. The mega cab's interior space is nearly identical to that of a quad cab with the exception of rear legroom. The mega cab adds some 22 inches of cab length to the already-wide interior, taking second-row spaciousness beyond any previous production pickup. The mega cab's rear seats offer 44. 2 inches of legroom, compared with 36. 7 for a quad cab. And there is room for the rear seats to recline, tilting up to 37-degrees for added comfort. The rear seats also have their own separate rear air conditioning and heat outlets, reading lights and a center armrest with cup holders.  dvd entertainment for rear seat passengers is available, with wireless headsets and integrated game ports. Behind the passengers is a power sliding rear window for flow-through ventilation. Because of the added length of the second-row seating area, the air bag system had to be redesigned with larger side curtain air bags. Each side air bag has its own impact sensor in order to trigger the air bag on the side where impact occurs.  from the driver's seat, the view is of a wide center stack with large knobs and buttons, precisely finished with consistent angles and cut lines throughout. The instrument panel cluster is located under a prominent dash brow to reduce glare and improve visibility of six white-faced gauges, the latter numbered on diesel-engine models. Rectangular, slat-type air vents close flush.  there is a marked distinction between trim levels. In st trim, the dash is textured plastic with synthetic-look inserts on the slt. The laramie package makes extensive use of wood trim inside, with less plastic, for a more distinctive appearance.  the seats are generously padded and proved to be comfortable, especially the six-way driver's seat in the laramie, which can be shifted around as any particular position becomes tiresome on long trips. The leather upholstery adds a rich appearance to the interior of laramie models. With the optional front bucket seats, a new center console extends from the dashboard. Even those of us used to operating domestic pickups and tow vehicles are aware of the ram's imposing size and stance. Inside the cabin, it is a long reach to hand something across the console to a passenger, and there would be no hope of leaning across to open the passenger door, or grab something from the opposite door pocket. Interior door handles are large and heavily built, consistent with the large size of the ram doors.  the cabin is loaded with nicely sized trays, slots and pockets. It seemed there was always a safe place to put something down, yet keep it within easy reach. The armrest opens in two parts and center console is big enough for a laptop, and is designed with fold-down dividers.  the optional 5. 8-inch navigation screen is surrounded by buttons and knobs; perhaps a bit on the small side but located up high for good viewing. With the standard front bench seat, a very wide center console flips up to allow makeshift center seating. There is additional storage unde.
